چکیده

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Since I left my country to study abroad, two years almost passed. I spend the first year at Delft, the Netherlands, for the courses studying. The second year I moved to Leuven, Belgium, for my master thesis. I had a happy life in the past two years, even though it was full of challenges. Here I would like to acknowledge a lot of people, who accompanied me and shared my happiness, and especially those people who offered helps and encouraged me when I felt lost in my difficult times. First and foremost, I want to express my sincere gratitude to prof. dr. ir. Albert J.P. Theuwissen, my supervisor at TU Delft for his guidance and support of my thesis. Most importantly, he is the tutor that introduced me to the wonderful world of CMOS image sensors. I would also like to thank Munir Abdalla Mohamed, my daily supervisor at imec for his continuous support of my master study and research, and also for this interesting topic proposed by him. I am happy to see that he has got recovered recently from a surgery, and now he is back to us. In addition, I would like to give my thanks to the group leader Francesco Cannillo who behaved as my temporary daily supervisor during the period when Munir was in hospital. His broad knowledge left me a deep impression, and also his hard working sprit inspired me. Lot of thanks are given to David San Segundo Bello. He is so nice and always willing to help. Thanks for his patient guidance and elaborate explanations. Every time I see him I would remind myself " Always give people more than they expect. " I would also like to acknowledge Srinjoy Mitra, Nick van Helleputte, and all the other engineers in the group, for sharing their knowledge and offering help. IV My thanks are also given to Youngcheol Chae and Yue Chen from Electronic Instrumentation Lab at TU Delft. I used to have short conversations with them when I was in the Netherlands. Even though what they said was difficult for me to understand then, it is proved to be quite useful later when I get a better understanding. In addition, I want to thank all my friends in Belgium and the Netherlands: for the happy life with them. My deepest gratitude is given to my beloved family, my parents, for their …

Column-parallel Single-slope Adcs for Cmos Image Sensors

In recent years, CMOS imagers have evolved as the imaging technology of choice for high volume mobile applications. The ever-increasing resolution of such imagers has had a profound impact on the analog readout electronics, and, in particular, the ADC architecture. This paper gives an overview of the development of column-parallel ADCs that enable the high-speed, power-efficient readout of high...

Column-Parallel Single Slope ADC with Digital Correlated Multiple Sampling for Low Noise CMOS Image Sensors

This paper presents a low noise CMOS image sensor (CIS) using 10/12 bit configurable column-parallel single slope ADCs (SS-ADCs) and digital correlated multiple sampling (CMS). The sensor used is a conventional 4T active pixel with pinned-photodiode as detector. The test sensor has been fabricated in 0.18 μm CMOS image sensor process from TSMC. The ADC nonlinearity measurement result shows tota...

A 12-Bit High-Speed Column-Parallel Two-Step Single-Slope Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) for CMOS Image Sensors

A 12-bit high-speed column-parallel two-step single-slope (SS) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for CMOS image sensors is proposed. The proposed ADC employs a single ramp voltage and multiple reference voltages, and the conversion is divided into coarse phase and fine phase to improve the conversion rate. An error calibration scheme is proposed to correct errors caused by offsets among the ref...

A Two-Step A/D Conversion and Column Self-Calibration Technique for Low Noise CMOS Image Sensors

In this paper, a 120 frames per second (fps) low noise CMOS Image Sensor (CIS) based on a Two-Step Single Slope ADC (TS SS ADC) and column self-calibration technique is proposed. The TS SS ADC is suitable for high speed video systems because its conversion speed is much faster (by more than 10 times) than that of the Single Slope ADC (SS ADC). However, there exist some mismatching errors betwee...

Noise Reduction Effect of Multiple-Sampling-Based Signal-Readout Circuits for Ultra-Low Noise CMOS Image Sensors

This paper discusses the noise reduction effect of multiple-sampling-based signal readout circuits for implementing ultra-low-noise image sensors. The correlated multiple sampling (CMS) technique has recently become an important technology for high-gain column readout circuits in low-noise CMOS image sensors (CISs). This paper reveals how the column CMS circuits, together with a pixel having a ...

Comparison of Several Ramp Generator Designs For Column-Parallel Single Slope ADCs

Many CMOS image sensors now use columnparallel readout structure with single slope ADCs. Ramp generator in the ADCs is a critical building block since the performance of the ADCs depends a lot on the accuracy of the ramp signal. In this paper, we present several ramp generator architectures and compare their performance in terms of resolution, area, noise and reliability.
